Tsubasa Ono (Tao Tsuchiya) is in the first grade of Shirato High School in Sapporo, Japan. The high school is famous for its baseball team and brass band. While Tsubasa Ono views a trophy for the brass band, she meets Daisuke Yamada (Ryoma Takeuchi) who is standing next to her and staring at the trophy for the baseball team.
Tsubasa Ono tells Daisuke that she came to Shirato High School after she watched the brass band cheering from the stands during the Koshien baseball tournament. Daisuke is also in the first grade of high school and a member of the high school baseball team. He promises Tsubasa Ono that the team will make it to the Koshien baseball tournament and she can cheer from the stands there. Tsubasa has difficulties learning to play the trumpet for the brass band, but Daisuke cheers her up. She begins to have feelings for Daisuke and they go forward with their dream.
A series of grotesque murder cases takes place on rainy days. Detective Hisashi Sawamura (Shun Oguri) works to catch the murderer like he has done with past cases, but he soon realizes the murderer's next target is his wife and son. A man in a frog mask is a suspect.
Masaatsu Naito (Kuranosuke Sasaki) successfully completes Sankin-kotai (required ritual to visit the shogun). On his way home, he hears that an insurrection by peasants has taken place in his hometown of Yunagaya. Masaatsu Naito knows that it is a counterattack by Matsudaira. He returns to Yunagaya, but finds that his castle is gone.
Kanami (Mirai Shida) is an apprentice pierrot and dreams of making people laugh. She falls in love with Yosuke (Ryo Ryusei) who is a dialysis patient. He forgets to smile. To make Yosuke smile, Kanami decides to have a smile no matter what. Yosuke begins to have feelings to her and they decide to marry. On the day before their wedding Yosuke collapses.
An incident is talked about all over Japan. The case involves the Doisaki couple that killed their 15-year-old daughter and hid her body under their house for 16 years.
One day, housewife Toshiko Hagiya visits Shigeko Maehata (Yukie Nakama) who works for a small editing company. Toshiko tells Shigeko that her 12-year-old son Hitoshi might have a special ability to see other people's memories. She pulls out a picture drawn by Hitoshi. The picture has a girl with a grey colored face lying in a house that has a bat shaped weather vane on its roof. The picture seems to depict the incident involving the Doisaki couple. Shigeko decides to do some research, but Hitoshi dies in a car accident.
Meanwhile, the attorney for the Doisaki couple tells their second daughter Seiko that the couple has cut off all ties with her. Around that time, a female high student is confined.
Natsumi (Kasumi Arimura) wants to become a photographer. She takes a bike which her late father left behind and goes to a forest to find a firefly she saw with her father. In the forest, Natsumi meets old mother Yasu and old son Jizo. They run a general store. Natsumi learns how to live in nature from them. She has happy summer days there. One day, Jizo tells her that he became estranged from his son in the past.
Kotoha Ninomiya (Manami Higa) works in the general affairs department at a confectionery company. Suddenly, she receives an order to transfer to the public relations department. She has a hard time there. Making things worse, Kotoha Ninomiya learns that Atsushi Imagawa (Dai Watanabe), whom she holds secret feelings for, is about to marry another woman. They have been friends since they were young. Heart broken, she attends Atsushi’s wedding ceremony. At the ceremony, she is moved by Kumi Kuon’s (Kyoko Hasegawa) congratulatory speech. Kotoha Ninomiya is a legendary speech writer.
